BARN RATTING / CHASSE EN GRANGE

Barn Ratting requires good communication with your dog and an ability to discriminate odours and live animals.
Barn style hunts are held either indoors or outdoors. The land or building used is defined by fences or walls. Depending on the level of difficulty, many tubes may be used. These can be empty, or containing either rats and/or rat litter. Tubes are hidden between bales of hay or straw. The tubes must be in plain view of the handler and the judge, being more or less visible depending on the competition level.
The team is allocated 2 minutes to find the rat/s. The handler and the dog enter the ring at the same time. The handler can give one verbal command then must remain silent for the first 30 seconds while the dog hunts (the amount of time changes per level). Afterwards, the handler may encourage and direct his dog verbally. The handler is responsible to make the timer stop, calling ‘Rat!’ to the judge, when he believes that his dog has found a rat. If an an incorrect tube was identified, the timer will continue despite being a non-qualifier. If a dog eliminates in the ring it will be disqualified.
Touching the dog before the judge confirms that the last rat tube is found or touching a tube that has not yet been identified leads to an automatic disqualification. You may however pet your dog briefly after he has found a rat tube.
The tube(s) where the rats are hidden are switched places for each blind. At the novice level, there are 3 tubes: 1 rat, 1 litter and 1 empty and clean. Qualifying in your first or second ever sanctioned novice barn hunt run leads to Barn Ratting Instinct Title (IBAR).

CHASSE EN GRANGE
La chasse en grange nécessite une bonne communication avec votre chien et la capacité à discriminer les odeurs et les animaux vivants.
Les chasses en grange ont lieu à l'intérieur ou à l'extérieur. Le terrain ou le bâtiment utilisé est délimité par des clôtures ou des murs. Selon le niveau de difficulté, de nombreux tubes peuvent être utilisés. Ceux-ci peuvent être vides ou contenir des rats et/ou de la litière souillée. Les tubes sont cachés entre des balles de foin ou de paille. Les tubes doivent être bien en vue du manieur et du juge, plus ou moins visibles selon le niveau de compétition.
L'équipe dispose de 2 minutes pour trouver le ou les rats. Le manieur et le chien entrent dans l'enceinte en même temps. Le manieur peut donner un ordre verbal puis doit rester silencieux pendant les 30 premières secondes pendant que le chien chasse (le temps change par niveau). Par la suite, le manieur peut encourager et diriger verbalement son chien. Le manieur est responsable d'arrêter le chronomètre en appelant "Rat!" pour le juge lorsqu'il croit que son chien a trouvé un rat. Si un tube incorrect a été identifié, le chronomètre continuera malgré le fait que la course est non-qualifiée. Si un chien élimine dans l'enceinte il sera disqualifié.
Toucher le chien avant que le juge ne confirme que le dernier rat tube est trouvé ou toucher un tube qui n'a pas encore été identifié entraîne une disqualification automatique. Vous pouvez cependant caresser votre chien brièvement après qu'il ait trouvé un tube à rat.
Le ou les tubes où les rats sont cachés sont déplacés pour chaque groupe en attente. Au niveau novice, il y a 3 tubes : 1 rat, 1 litière et 1 vide et propre. Une qualification dans votre première ou deuxième course de chasse en grange novice homologuée mène au titre Barn Ratting Instinct (IBAR).
